Transcrição do episódio

What’s up, everyone? Welcome back to Fluency News! I’m Scott Lowe, your host. Good job taking this time out of your day to work on your English. These Fluency News episodes are here to help you to practice your listening skills, learn lots of new expressions and vocabulary, and stay informed, all at the same time!

How awesome is that?

Now, let’s get down to business! It’s time to talk about some of the top stories around the globe, followed by a few explanations in Portuguese!

It’s official, the world’s tallest tree is now off-limits to visitors, and for a good reason. The tree in question is named Hyperion and is located in California’s Redwood National Park in the US and is approximately 600 years old.

There is no official trail leading to the tree and it sits deep inside the forest, so people must go through tall vegetation to reach it, but that’s not enough to keep it safe from humans.

“Despite the difficult journey, increased popularity due to bloggers, travel writers, and websites of this off-trail tree has resulted in the devastation of the habitat surrounding Hyperion,” park officials said in a statement.

The 115-meter tall Hyperion and other trees of its kind have roots that grow near the surface, making it very vulnerable to this large number of visitors, which is why the whole area is currently damaged.

Redwood National Park’s chief of natural resources, stated “There was trash, and people were creating even more side trails to use the bathroom. They leave used toilet paper and human waste—it’s not a good thing, not a good scene.”

The park’s team also mentioned that the tree is not very impressive when seen from the ground and that other trees along the official trail look much cooler and more interesting. Authorities announced that from now on, tourists who try to find Hyperion could face fines of $5,000 or up to six months in jail.

Então se alguém dissesse “Scott teaches German here” o Scott ensina alemão aqui. Eu diria “Actually, I teach English!”

Nancy Pelosi, the politician serving as speaker of the United States House of Representatives, arrived in Taiwan on Tuesday the 2nd of August to meet with the country’s president, making this the first visit of that kind since 1997.

When the visit was announced, there were warnings from the Chinese government, who stated that they wouldn’t accept it because it would be a “violation of the Chinese sovereignty” over the region, even though Taiwan is an independent territory.

China’s reaction to Nancy’s arrival included blocking Taiwanese imports, launching several planned missile tests, and military “operations” around the island, all deeply reproved by the Taiwanese government.

Pelosi said that 43 years ago the US made a promise to always stand with Taiwan, and stated on Wednesday that “Our delegation came to Taiwan to make unequivocally clear we will not abandon Taiwan, and we are proud of our enduring friendship”.

She later praised Taiwan’s growth into a leading democracy, now led by its first woman president, and described China’s reaction as “a big fuss” about this visit because of her status as speaker. “I don’t know if that’s a reason or an excuse.”

Na frase fica assim “my cat made a fuss about my new sofa” o meu gato fez um rebuliço por causa do meu sofá” ou “Jane made a big fuss about my new tattoo” a Jane fez um auê por causa da minha tatuagem nova.

And now it’s time for today’s final story! These news are a bit hard to believe, but tell me: did you enjoy the last batman movie? Do you enjoy the DC universe?

Warner Brothers Discovery has made the shocking announcement that “Batgirl”, the DC film that had already finished being filmed, will no longer come out. That’s right, the 90-million-dollar project has been canceled and will not be made available to the public.

The studio did not make any official comments about the decision but there are some speculations around the very “poor” performance the movie had during test screenings and also around the contents of the movie being very different from what the public expects from the DC universe today.

The production had superstars such as Michael Keaton, JK Simmons, and Brandon Fraser as part of the cast, and actress Leslie Grace as Batgirl. The studio stated that the decision was not a reflection of their work.

This announcement means the film ranks among the most expensive canceled cinematic projects ever. Along with Batgirl, the studio announced that the movie “Scoob! Holiday Haunt” has also been canceled and will never be released.

And that’s it for today, folks! But relax, we’ll be back next week for more expressions, vocabulary, and news!
