Now, without further ado… Let’s get to the news!

Have you heard the hit podcast “A mulher da casa abandonada”, the woman of the abandoned house? The rising author, Chico Felitti, has won major prizes before, but it seems like his true masterpiece is at its highest! Felitti’s latest podcast tells the story of Margarida Bonetti, a woman born with a silver spoon, who married an engineer known as Renè Bonetti. The couple had emigrated to the United States along with a maid, a domestic employee they had “received” as a “wedding gift” and then held in conditions analogous to slavery for over twenty years. It’s declared that the maid was a victim of physical and psychological abuse. Besides, she was not allowed to have access to the family’s fridge or leave their house, not even to get treatment for a tumor she had developed.

With the help of some neighbors in Gaithersburg, Maryland, and the FBI itself, the maid was rescued and Renè was sentenced to six years and five months in prison in the U.S.

Margarida, on the other hand, managed to escape the trial by flying back to Brazil, where she has been living like a fugitive ever since. She started a new life as a resident of a mysterious, creepy mansion in Higienópolis, a wealthy São Paulo neighborhood. The property sets the haunted house scenario. On top of that, the woman rarely leaves the house, and the few times she has been seen, her face was completely white, covered in a facial cream she always wears. No wonder a few people claim ghosts haunt the place.

As the story is engaging and the internet is all over it, the abandoned house has become a tourist attraction. Many residents and tourists have been seen outside the mansion since the podcast aired, not all of them merely curious, though. Many were outraged, trying to break into the house. Merchants around the property stated that even the sales increased, due to the buzz of the podcast. The journalist responsible for the podcast states that he discourages vandalism. He said this rage would be more effective when directed towards the issue itself: racism and false imprisonment.

Do you have pets? Dogs? Cats? Rabbits? How did you get them? Pets and breeds have always been a delicate topic to talk about. Many people dream of owning a specific breed. Others believe that buying pets of breed is unethical and should be forbidden. Either side you stand by, you will want to know what’s going on in New York.

The bill that bans the sales of dogs, cats and rabbits in the state of New York passed the Legislature in June and now awaits the decision of Governor Kathy Hochul, who’s caught in the crossfire, as her office became the battlefield of the clash between pet welfare groups and the pet store industry. Activists have been flooding it with postcards and campaigns showing explicit images of puppies in filthy conditions in order to push her decision. Representatives of pet stores, in response, have scheduled many meetings to discuss the matter and one of them even has started an independent campaign posting videos featuring well-treated puppies that went viral on Tiktok. Both sides are trading accusations of lying and spreading misinformation.

Although the decision seems a bit extreme for us Brazilians, New York wouldn’t be the first U.S. state to take it. States like California, Illinois and Maryland have passed similar bans before, ending or reducing commercial breeders. The New Yorkian Governor has until the end of the year to decide. We’ll be waiting for the next chapters of this story

She is caught in the crossfire”.

For example: “As the parents fight over the custody of the child, the kid is caught in the crossfire”.

And for this next topic I gotta ask you… Are you a fan of social media? Have you noticed anything different about your instagram lately? Maybe the lack of familiar faces smiling in pictures and a bunch of videos from strangers replacing it? Almost as if instagram is trying a little too hard to be tiktok? Well, if the answer was yes and it pisses you off, you are not alone.

Instagram’s second most-followed account is with you. (We’re talking 360 million followers).

Kylie Jenner, one of the most successful Kardashian and the second greatest profile on Instagram, appears to be longing for the good old days on the platform. She has recently shared on her Instagram Stories another user’s post, that says “Make Instagram Instagram again”, and “(Stop trying to be tiktok. I just want to see cute pictures of my friends.) Sincerely, everyone.”. The post has over 1,5 million likes and it’s linked to a petition claiming the previous layout and settings. The petition already has almost 250 thousand signatures and keeps growing.

What’s more interesting is whether Instagram cares about the feedback, especially given Kylie’s power of influence on social platforms. In 2018, after a Snapchat redesign gave the company grief, Jenner tweeted that she doesn’t open the app anymore. Snap’s stock lost roughly $1.3 billion in value over the following day. Jenner isn’t alone in her dislike for a short-form video-heavy Instagram: when Instagram posted a TikTok video announcing a test of the full-screen video feed, the post was flooded with negative reactions, most of the comments being huge “NOOOOO”s in capital letters.

Veja a diferença nesses exemplos:

“You can’t control your feelings, only your actions”
“Snapchat’s stock
lost roughly $1.3 billion in value over the following day.”

Outra dica aqui é a palavra whether (soletrar), usada na frase “What’s more interesting is whether Instagram cares about the feedback, especially given Kylie’s power of influence on social platforms”.

I can’t decide whether I should order pizza, a burger or japanese food
I will do it whether you like it or not!
I love to be outdoors, whether it’s on the mountain or on the beach, it’s always awesome!

Pegou? Agora manda pra gente lá no Instagram, @fluencytvingles, alguma frase que você montou usando “whether”! Oh And don’t forget to tell us which news you liked the best!

É isso ai, pessoal! Those were the news of the week! Gostaram?
Obrigada por ter me acompanhado até aqui! Terça-feira que vem tem mais!
Byeee!
