Now, how about we dive in?

The James Webb Space Telescope sent in its first images, and they are out of this world, pun intended. The telescope made history, proving to be the most powerful space-based observatory ever built, and revealing a baby portion of the huge universe around us in breathtaking detail.

Astronomers around the world have been shown cheering, in tears and lost for words. The pictures brought delight – and relief – for researchers who have waited decades for the project to become a reality.

The images show off vibrant nebulas and exotic galaxies in extraordinary detail.

The first spectacular image released was of the galaxy cluster SMACS 0723 which is nearly 5 billion light years away. Five BILLION light years away! Isn’t that incredible? I can’t even begin to understand that distance!

More images captured the Southern Ring nebula, and within Stephan’s Quintet, an active black hole. While the black hole itself cannot be seen, there is material swirling around it, being swallowed by the cosmic monster. Remember last year, we talked about the first ever image of a black hole? Who knows, maybe we’ll be able to see another one now.

The final image, of the Carina nebula, is so rich in detail that researchers could see bubbles and cavities and blasting out of newborn stars, along with hundreds more stars they had never seen before. “We see structures that we don’t even know what they are”, said Dr. Amber Straughn, a Nasa astrophysicist.

How unbelievably cool is that? You can see some of the images by going to fluencytv.com, and clicking the links in the description. You’ll also find the transcript of this episode, and all of our other sources.

“Itself” é um reflexive pronoun. Mas não se preocupe com essa definição. Você não precisa saber o que é um pronome reflexivo pra entender “itself”. Quando a gente adiciona “self” depois de um sujeito, é como se a gente adicionasse a palavra “mesmo” em português, ou “por conta própria”. É usado quando uma ação reflete em quem fez a ação. Tipo assim: I hurt myself, eu me machuquei, ou eu machuquei a mim mesmo; You have to think for yourself, você tem que pensar por si mesmo. Funciona da mesma forma com it. É só lembrar que nós usamos it pra falar de coisas e animais!

And the nominees are out for this year’s Primetime Emmys! “Succession” was the most-nominated program of 2022, earning 25 nods, including outstanding drama. “Ted Lasso” followed, with 20 nominations, and then “The White Lotus,” the most-recognized limited series, with 20. “Stranger Things”, a show we talked about here, got 13 nominations, none for acting.

The announcement of this year’s 74th Emmy nominations came last Tuesday, made by J.B. Smoove and Melissa Fumero, two of the stars of Netflix’s upcoming comedy “Blockbuster”.

The ceremony is set to air on September 12, and there’s still no information about who will host. “Stranger Things”, “Severance”, “Succession”, and “Squid Game” were all nominated for best drama series, along with others. “Squid Game” made history, becoming the first-ever non-English language show to receive a nod by the Television Academy. The South Korean drama earned a total of 14 Emmy nominations, including lead actor, supporting actress, supporting actors and guest actress.

The late Chadwick Boseman made history with his posthumous nomination for “What If…?,” the animated Marvel Cinematic Universe series, in which he voiced his “Black Panther” character, T’Challa. Boseman is now the first male performer to receive a posthumous nomination in the character voice-over category.

Now tell me, when was the last time you reached out to a friend? Let me share something really cool with you guys! A new study shows that unexpectedly reaching out to a friend is more appreciated than people assume.

In fact, the more surprising the “reaching out” is, the more people tend to appreciate it. The study was published on July 11 in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology

There is a lot of research showing that maintaining social connections is good for both your mental and physical health. But despite it, this new study suggests that people don’t really understand how much other people enjoy being reached out to.

To reach this conclusion, the study’s authors conducted a series of experiments involving more than 5,900 participants. They wanted to explore how accurate people are at estimating how others might appreciate an attempt to connect.

As lead author Peggy Liu points out, people are fundamentally social beings, and enjoy connecting with others. But, many people lose touch with others over time, and initiating social contact after a long period of distance can feel intimidating because people worry about how it’ll be received.

However, this study suggests that other people are much more likely to love being reached out to than you think.

Aqui o verbo é reach, e a preposição é out. Reach, sozinho, significa “alcançar”, e out significa “fora”. Quando dizemos que vamos “reach out to someone”, quer dizer que nós vamos entrar em contato com alguém, que vamos, de alguma forma, nos aproximar delas.

So, get your phone out, and send a text to that person you love, but haven’t spoken with in a while. I’m sure they’ll love hearing from you.

Thank you so much for joining me today, folks! It’s awesome you’re taking time to study and practice your English skills.
