Grande parte do mundo hoje só consegue pensar em uma coisa: copa do mundo. Pode não ser o maior “big deal” aqui nos EUA, mas eu sei que pra vocês brasileiros e para maior parte do mundo esse é O evento do ano. E depois de 4 anos de espera, como sempre, a copa vem entregando aquilo que promete. Acontece que nesse ano ela tá entregando ainda mais do que prometeu, e já estão dizendo que essa é a copa mais imprevisível em muitos anos, acompanhe o porquê:
The 2022 Qatar World Cup has had its share of controversy: poor labor conditions, bribery accusations, extreme rules and restrictions… However, the event is likely to be remembered for something else: unpredictable match scores.
It hasn’t been easy for those who are into gambling. People reported they’re losing money even on their safest bets. Let’s picture it: Argentina, a team considered likely to win the World Cup, lost unexpectedly to Saudi Arabia, a team in which most of the players are still unknown worldwide.
Then it was time for Japan to defeat one of the most solid teams there is, Germany, and leave us all speechless. But right after the accomplishment, the same Japan that defeated Germany loses to Costa Rica, a team that lost to Spain 7×0. While that same Spanish team didn’t even defeat Germany. Unbelievable, isn’t it?
Argentina and Germany got it bad… No wonder why you Brazilians are so happy haha
Well, and there’s more: the underestimated soccer team from Morocco managed to win over Belgium, another solid team. Two beautiful scores in that game for Morocco. Also, Iran winning against Wales. Not to mention the exciting and unexpected twist in the game between South Korea and Ghana, in which Ghana’s team turned the game around and won 3×2. Even the US surprised the world with their tie with England. So far, it’s been a bed of roses for you Brazilians, and you don’t have to worry anymore about the group stage. But keep your eyes open, ‘cause this World Cup is full of surprises.
[sua opinião pessoal sobre a copa do mundo] Dito isso, vamos às dicas! A Copa tá aqui e é uma baita oportunidade de interagir com pessoas de outras nacionalidades em inglês, então vamos ver o que dá pra aprender com a notícia para falar sobre a copa em inglês!
Começamos dizendo que essa copa vai ficar reconhecida por “unpredictable match scores” – ou seja, resultados de jogos imprevisíveis. E isso estava dificultando a vida de quem curte “gambling”, apostas! O verbo apostar é “to bet”, e a aposta é “the bet”, gambling é mais o conceito, por exemplo, sites de aposta – gambling websites.
Aí temos o vocabulário básico:
“To win” – ganhar
“To lose” – perder
“To defeat” – derrotar
“The match” – a partida
“The score” – a pontuação, ou o ponto, o gol
“A tie” – um empate
“A twist in the game” – uma virada no jogo
“They turned the game around” – eles viraram o jogo.
E aí terminamos dizendo que agora vocês brasileiros não tem mais que se preocupar com o “group stage”, ou seja, a fase de grupos, mas que é melhor “keep your eyes open” either way!
Já imaginou sair às ruas para protestar com um cartaz em branco que não dizia nada? É o que está acontecendo na China. Folhas em branco viraram armas perigosas de protesto, confira:
In countries where freedom of speech is limited, one has to be creative to develop subtle and effective methods to protest.
It was the decisions regarding the Chinese “Zero Covid” policy that triggered the protests. The government has commanded severe lockdowns in many cities in the last few months, including huge industrial, commercial, and financial centers, like Shanghai and Shenzhen.
China has the strictest lockdown policies worldwide, including isolating people in government installations and shutting down companies, stores, airports, and schools. And the restriction will stand until there is no case of covid registered in the country.
The wave of protests in at least a dozen cities erupted after a fire in the far western region of Xinjiang on Thursday killed 10 people by official count, a toll that many suspected was linked to Covid restrictions that have confined people to their homes. Demonstrators used the white sheets to mourn those lost — white is a common funeral color in China — and to express a fit of anger understood implicitly by millions who have suffered under pandemic restrictions.
In Xangai, many were out on the campus of Tsinghua University – once attended by the current leader Xi Jinping – holding white sheets of paper and other symbols of protest, like a woman with her hands cuffed and tape on her mouth. To the press, she said, “there’s nothing written there, but they know exactly what was supposed to be. We’re defying them. How will you arrest me for saying nothing?”.
These messages — elusive, creative, and often ironic — were among many that captured the tone of protests across China this past weekend, as fury over lockdown measures nearly three years into the pandemic has quickly developed into one of the boldest displays of dissent against the Chinese authorities in years.
É, parece que a situação na China está bem crítica mesmo. Vamos torcer e fazer a nossa parte para que a pandemia não seja um problema reincidente.Mas olha a dica aqui nessa notícia. Presta atenção aqui:

Como assim “one”? Só uma pessoa teria que ser criativa? O que isso quer dizer?
Não é bem isso! “One” às vezes é usado para falar das coisas de forma impessoal, igual a partícula “-se” do português. Então aqui poderíamos traduzir assim:
One has to be creative to develop subtle and effective methods to protest.
Deve-se ser criativo para desenvolver métodos sutis e eficientes de protestar.
Olha outro exemplo:
One must wear a mask.
Deve-se usar máscara.
Imagina você descobrir que o seu vizinho, ou seu colega de faculdade, o mesmo seu parceiro de dança nas aulas de forró e sertanejo universitário é na verdade um espião russo disfarçado? Pois é, muita gente se chocou ao descobrir que tinha um espião de verdade vivendo a vida numa boa aqui no Brasil! Olha só:
Accused of being a Russian spy, Sergey Vladimirovich Cherkasov was arrested in the Netherlands and returned to Brazil, after presenting himself as the Brazilian Victor Muller Ferreira, the son of a Brazilian mother and a Portuguese father, raised by an aunt in Argentina.
He studied political science in Ireland from 2015 to 2018, and took a master’s degree in the U.S. at John Hopkins University, all under the identity of Brazilian Victor Ferreira. He was arrested trying to get into the Netherlands where he was supposed to work at the International Criminal Court. The police even found a letter from him to himself with the biography of the character “Victor Ferreira”.
Some of the people he met along the way in Brazil have spoken out. The janitor of one of his five Brazilian addresses said he was very nice and that they were friends. He said the spy used to take Forró and Sertanejo dancing classes and that he seemed to be completely normal. One of his teachers at the university said he was a good student, seemed normal, and even dated a girl for nine months when in college. Both of them stated that they are shocked by the fact Victor was actually a Russian Spy.
When Sergey was arrested, he denied being Russian, he stood by the affirmation that he was Victor Ferreira and that all that was a misunderstanding. Two weeks later, however, a Russian diplomat visited him and he confessed to being Sergey Vladimirovich Cherkasov, but kept on saying he was no spy. The proof, though, is against him. A request for house arrest is to be judged, in which “home” would be the Russian embassy. The Brazilian press has questioned the Russians whether it is acceptable to host a doomed criminal, although they did not answer. We look forward to the story’s conclusion.
Meu Deus gente, que loucura! Imagina, um dia você tá dançando um forrózinho com o cara e no outro ele tá preso acusado de ser um espião russo! Loucura! Mas olha só essa dica de preposição nessa notícia. Presta atenção nessas frases:
He studied political science in Ireland from 2015 to 2018.
He was arrested trying to get into the Netherlands.
Se ambas as palavras depois da preposições são países, por que uma é “in” e a outra “into”?
Bom, “in” tem esse sentido de “dentro”, então sempre quando falamos de países usamos “in”. “I live in the US. You live in Brazil.” Mas quando esse sentido de “dentro” está atrelado a um movimento, vamos juntar o “in” a preposição “to”. Então o sentido de “ir pra dentro” será “into”.
He was trying to get into the netherlands.
Ele estava tentando entrar. Tentando “ir pra dentro”. Beleza?
Olha outro exemplo:
I long to go into the unknown. (como é dito no filme Frozen 2)
Eu preciso ir “em direção/para dentro” do desconhecido.
