Você já sentiu vontade de sumir? Quem nunca teve aqueles momentos dramáticos na adolescência imaginando “o que será que aconteceria se eu sumisse por uns dias? Quem sentiria minha falta?” Será que foi essa fantasia que se realizou na nossa primeira história do dia? Escuta só:
Sherri Papini, a resident of the state of California, went missing in 2016, or at least that’s what authorities thought. Her husband, Keith, came home from work one day and she just wasn’t there, she wasn’t picking up the phone, and had not picked up her children from daycare.
Her disappearance initiated an official search around the state and a USD $50.000 reward was put up for whoever returned her to safety. After three weeks she was found, with burns and bind marks across her body. Sherri told authorities that two Hispanic women had kidnapped her, tied her up, and branded her when she tried to escape.
The story was on the news worldwide, and investigators worked to find Sherri’s two kidnappers for the four years she spent telling that story. Thousands of dollars went into the case until the police finally tested the DNA in the blood that was on her shirt the day she returned home and found out that it belonged to her ex-boyfriend, who she had stayed with for the whole three weeks.
When confronted with the evidence, Sherri confessed to the hoax and ended up sharing that she had lied to law enforcement and loved ones “in order to receive benefits as a result of her alleged ‘post-traumatic stress’ from being abducted,” the Justice Department said.
Mrs. Papini was arrested in March this year and her trial came to an end this week, with a sentence of 18 months in prison, followed by 36 months of supervision and a fine of $310.000.
She told the judge “I am so sorry to the many people who have suffered because of me. The people who sacrificed for the broken woman I was.“
Gente, eu não imaginei que essa história seria tão revoltante assim. Imagine a reação dessa equipe de investigadores que passaram 4 anos procurando as tais sequestradoras, quando descobriram que era tudo inventado?
Tem uma palavra aqui na notícia que descreve bem essa história toda e é algo legal de se ter no vocabulário: hoax, na frase:
Lettering: Sherri confessed to the hoax.
A Sherri confessou o que? A farsa! Hoax, quer dizer farsa, uma enganação bem séria, normalmente umas coisas mais elaboradas. Imagine que um amigo seu chega te contando que encontrou um site que vai deixar ele rico em 48 horas, você pode falar pra ele:
Dude, that website is a hoax.
Cara, esse site é uma farsa.
Essa palavra é também um verbo, com esse sentido de enganar ou pregar uma peça. A frase fica assim:
That guy is trying to hoax those tourists.
Aquele cara tá tentando enganar aqueles turistas.
Não sei você, mas eu morro de medo de levar golpe quanto estou turistando em outros países.
O enterro da rainha Elizabeth foi um evento longo e muitas pessoas compareceram, mas nem tudo foi grandioso! O funeral contou também com alguns detalhes pequenos em homenagem a monarca.
After 11 days of national mourning, Queen Elizabeth was finally laid to rest inside Windsor castle, a nearly 800-year-old building, joining her father and husband. Hundreds of thousands of people joined the procession to pay their last respects to the monarch during her funeral.
Among the highlighted moments were the tears shed by members of the royal family, especially by 7-year-old Princess Charlotte, as well as the appearance of several world leaders and the actual procession and military lining the way.
But beyond tradition, there were reminders that this was not only a nation’s goodbye to a monarch, but also a tribute to a woman who was a mother, grandmother, churchgoer, and dog lover
Having owned and loved corgis since the age of 10, it was fitting that the Queen’s companions were part of the procession, so two of her corgis, Muick and Sandy, were there at the castle.
Queen Elizabeth’s other passion was her horses, with whom she had always enjoyed spending time, making her pony Emma an important guest
The late queen was present through jewelry as well, with Kate Middleton wearing her pearl choker and Meghan Markle wearing the pearl earrings she got as a wedding gift from Elizabeth.
One more peculiar fact is that the Queen had a personal piper, who played outside her window for 15 minutes every day and played at the funeral as a personal request from the monarch. And of course, her favorite song, The Lord is my Shepherd, was a part of the event being sung by the 2.000 mourners that were present.

A palavra “fitting” não é a mais fácil de traduzir, mas quando se diz que algo é “fitting” quer dizer que aquela coisa é muito apropriada, muito adequada para aquele situação. Por isso aqui dizemos que a rainha Elizabeth era apaixonada por cães da raça corgi desde os 10 anos, por isso era muito adequado seus corgis estivessem lá! Vamo ler a frase de novo:
Having owned and loved corgis since the age of 10, it was fitting that the Queen’s companions were part of the procession.
É comum usar também a expressão “it’s only fitting”. Com o mesmo sentido, mas um pouco mais intenso. Imagine que você tem uma sobrinha que ama Frozen e a Elsa, e o aniversário dela tá chegando. Você poderia dizer para os pais dela:
Lettering: She loves Elsa, it’s only fitting that she wears an Elsa costume.
Legenda: Ela ama a Elsa, é justo que ela use uma fantasia da Elsa.
Na tradução, “it’s only fitting” pode aparecer como “é justo / é apropriado / nada mais justo”! Ok? It’s only fitting = nada mais justo.

A model has used TikTok to go public about an affair with Maroon 5 vocalist, Adam Levine. Adam has been married to his wife Behati Prinsloo, who is a Victoria’s Secret model, since 2014 and the couple recently announced they are expecting their third child
And strangely, this is the reason model Sumner Stroh came out on TikTok about the affair. The model posted a video with screenshots of Adam asking her if he could name his baby after her in case the baby was a girl. She captioned the video, with the sentence “Embarrassed I was involved with a man with this utter lack of remorse and respect”. The publication is now close to the 20 million view mark.
She went on to state that the affair happened some time ago, but that he came back into her life with that message. The singer responded to the allegations saying “I used poor judgment in speaking with anyone other than my wife in any kind of flirtatious manner. I did not have an affair; nevertheless, I crossed the line during a regrettable period in my life.”
He went on to say that his family is the most important thing in his life and that he is ready to take responsibility for his actions and get through it with his wife.
Como já dizia a Avril Lavigne, é “complicated” né? E não, a Avril Lavigne não é parente do Adam Lavine.
E pra nossa última dica, temos uma expressão que é um pouco parecida com o português, aqui na frase do Adam:
Lettering: I crossed the line during a regrettable period in my life.
Quando ele diz que “crossed the line” o sentido é de que ele ultrapassou limites, no mau sentido mesmo. “Cross the line” pode se referir a relacionamentos, comportamentos, tudo que vai além do aceitável, normal ou necessário.
Imagine que um amigo pediu pra ficar na sua casa por uma semana, mas aí ele acaba ficando um mês, vai ter que falar pra ele:
Lettering: Man, I know we’re friends but you’ve crossed the line.
Legenda: Cara, eu sei que somos amigos mas você passou dos limites.
É isso gente, não deixem ninguém “cross the line” com você!
