O longo reinado da rainha Elizabeth chegou ao fim depois de 70 anos, mas, e agora? Será que algo vai mudar nas relações dos outros países com a coroa? De acordo com a nossa primeira notícia, parece que sim! Bora entender o que tá acontecendo, vamo lá.
Although the British crown is usually associated with Britain and the United Kingdom, it is actually the head of a significant association of countries, most of them British colonies at some point in history, called The Commonwealth of Nations, or simply the Commonwealth.
This association tries to work together to promote similar ideas of democracy and society, and Queen Elizabeth was a big supporter of this allegiance,she would always visit these countries while on the throne. In fact, she expanded the commonwealth from 6 to 56 countries and was named head of state of 32 of these countries, but these numbers have been falling quickly, being now at just 14 including Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.
Countries have always been free to stay, join or leave the commonwealth, and it seems that with the Queen’s passing, a lot of them are questioning the alliance and some are not totally on board, especially the 14 that still have her as sovereign.
The former colonies have been distancing themselves from the monarchy over the last 50 years and just last year Barbados became a republic, no longer considering Elizabeth as their head of state. In addition, some protests have been happening in Caribbean countries, including one protest during Prince William and Kate’s last visit against the monarchy’s presence. Consequently, Charles’ crowning will probably be the trigger for more countries to cut ties.
Meera S., a professor in International relations from London University, explained “The Commonwealth has to deal with a central tension in it: On the one hand, people find its spaces useful for discussion; on the other, all its members are aware that it represents something in the past that nobody wants to return to, an imperial structure. […] People are more and more keen to get away from that history and then forge their own futures. […] It’s not at all clear to me that the next head of the Commonwealth would be a member of the British Royal Family.”.
56 países é bastante coisa, né? Vamos ver o que vai acontecer com essas relações que a Elizabeth construiu durante o trono dela agora que o Charles chegou aí.
Bom, vamos falar de uma expressão que ouvimos aqui! A Meera, professora da London University, falou:

Essa frases “on the one hand” e depois “on the other” são equivalentes ao “por um lado” e “por outro [lado]”! É um jeito de mostrar contrast! Então:
On the one hand
Por um lado
On the other
Por outro [lado]
Então eu poderia falar:
On the one hand, I want to stay home and rest, on the other, I haven’t seen my friends in ages.
Por um lado, eu quero ficar em casa e descansar, por outro, eu não vejo meus amigos faz um tempão
Decisão difícil, né? Eu amo ficar em casa mas também fico com saudades dos meus amigos!
Você acredita que a guerra entre a Russia e a Ucrânia já está completando 7 meses? Essa sequência de dias horríveis talvez tenha encontrado um momento de esperança para algumas das cidades ucranianas que foram invadidas, e antes de começar, já peço desculpas pela minha pronúncia dos nomes das cidades!
Cities in the east of Ukraine might finally be able to breathe and sleep in peace! After a lot of strategic planning, Ukrainian troops were able to push back and corner Russian groups, making them leave to escape being surrounded.
The Russian troops left the Kharkiv region in a hurry and ended up leaving behind significant numbers of weapons and munitions in a rushed retreat as the war reached day 200 on Sunday the 11th. Soon after the retreat, one of their ammunition depots was blown up by Ukrainian forces.
Ukraine’s military chief said that Ukraine’s actions had liberated about 3.000 square kilometers in the last few weeks, leaving only 50 kilometers yet to be liberated on that side. The Russian defense ministry denies this and says the retreat happened because more men were needed in the area of Donetsk, a different territory.
But there are many signs now that the Russian defense is beginning to crumble and troops may be running out of ammunition, and ceasefires or local surrenders are being arranged, particularly in that Kharkiv area.
In fear of retaliation, even Ukrainian citizens who cooperated with Russian troops are packing up and leaving the area, trying to enter Russia to escape the conflict and their charges of treason. The Kharkiv province authorities said that 50 cases had been opened for these accusations, including mayors, judges, and police officers.
E aí? Ficou muito ruim minha pronúncia dos nomes das cidades? Bom, vamo lá pra nossa dica da vez! Aqui no início da notícia, você ouviu que:
They might finally be able to breathe.
Aqui, temos a palavra breathe, escrita com E no final, B-R-E-A-T-H-E, essa palavra é o verbo respirar, breathe = respirar. Escuta só esses exemplos:
Lettering: I need a few minutes to breathe.
Legenda: Eu preciso de uns minutos para respirar.
Lettering: Fish can only breathe underwater.
Legenda: Peixes só conseguem respirar de baixo da água.
Mas existe outra palavra, escrita sem esse E no final, e ela a gente vai pronunciar como breath, e se escreve B-R-E-A-T-H, essa palavra pode ser traduzida como respiro, respiração e até hálito. Então se eu quiser falar do meu amigo George, que tinha mau hálito, eu vou dizer
Lettering: George doesn’t have bad breath anymore.
Legenda: O George não tem mais mau hálito.
E quando queremos dizer que alguém está sem ar, ou porque correu, nadou ou tá nervoso ou qualquer coisa do tipo, vou falar:
Lettering: She is out of breath now.
Legenda: Ela está sem ar agora.
Então, breathe = respirar, breath = respiração
E vamos falar de coisa boa na nossa última notícia de hoje? Vamos falar de música? Que o Rock in Rio é um dos maiores e mais icônicos festivais de música do mundo, você já sabe né, mas você tem ideia do tanto de dinheiro que o festival movimenta? After three years, Rock in Rio finally returned for the long-awaited 2022 edition. During two weekends, from the 2nd to the 11th of September, the festival attracted 420,000 people from outside Rio, plus 10,000 international visitors from 31 countries, totaling 700.000 fans.
Among the attractions were huge names such as Iron Maiden, Post Malone, Justin Bieber, Guns N’ Roses, Green Day, Avril Lavigne, Coldplay, and Dua Lipa. And even with the downpour on the second weekend, they made audiences go crazy, not only those who were there but also those watching at home.
The performances became trending topics on Twitter multiple times and were quite the national phenomenon, especially Coldplay’s heartfelt performance, visual effects and attempt to speak and sing in Portuguese.
“After three years, we could feel again the emotion of seeing the City of Rock full of fans who invade the lawns with contagious joy and with the sole purpose of being happy,” says Rock in Rio founder and president Roberto Medina.
Medina, by the way, has plenty of reason to be happy. The festival created 28.000 jobs and generated around 2 billion reals for the city of Rio, and was considered a mark of a new beginning and opened the possibility of expanding the festival to other countries such as The US and Chile.
Eu adorei ver o Coldplay falando Português! E fiquei surpreso ao descobrir que eles tem 8 shows lotados agendados para Outubro no Brasil, isso que é cair nas graças do povo brasileiro hein? E bora pra nossa última dica do dia, que é mais uma dica de vocabulário. Aqui na notícia tivemos a frase:
Lettering: Coldplay’s attempt to speak and sing in Portuguese.
A palavra “attempt” pode parecer algo muito diferente mas ela quer dizer simplesmente “tentativa” e a gente pode usar tanto como o verbo “tentar” quanto como o substantivo “tentativa”. A palavra “try” tem o mesmo sentido, mas “attempt” mais formal. Vamo ver como fica na frase, escuta só:
Lettering: We attempted to call him.
Legenda: Nós tentamos ligar para ele.
Lettering: You only have two attempts to break the record.
Legenda: Você tem só duas tentativas para quebrar o récorde.
É uma palavra chique essa!
